Humpback whale entanglement

There was some trouble at sea near the Gold Coast this week when a young humpback got tangled in shark nets near Coolangatta. The Sea World Rescue team and the fisheries department worked for 2 days to try to free the young whale.

The whale was eventually freed, however, they couldn’t completely remove the equipment so there’s a juvenile humpback whale swimming around with shark net equipment attached to its tail which is a shame. The rescue team monitored the whale until they were satisfied that it could swim without any issues but I still think it would be painful and dangerous for the whale.

Shark nets are obviously essential to keep humans safe at beaches but many other sea creatures often get entangled and injured in them.

Did you know that Humpback whales use a whistle like song to communicate that can be heard from about 20 miles away?
